Lesson Five

To place the class in my personal focus this week:

  1. Read Matthew 6:19-24 at least once a day.
  2. Find moments in the day when you can think about these verses.
  3. Think of specific incidents when a person trusts the "real" material rather than the "unseen" spiritual.
  4. Think of specific incidents when a person trusts the "unseen" spiritual rather than the "real" material.

Questions:

  1. Jesus' disciple will not create his or her primary source of security by doing what?

    1. What realization or understanding will not allow him or her to do this?

    2. Explain what it means to "place treasures on earth."

  2. What will Jesus' disciple do?

    1. Why will he or she do that?

    2. What does it mean to "place treasures in heaven"?

    3. How does a concern for "security" impact our understanding?

  3. Explain the connection between that which you most value and your true inner person. Explain the meaning of "there will be your heart."

  4. Explain why each of these things are thieves:

    1. The moth.

    2. Rust.

    3. Those who steal.

    4. What do they have in common?

  5. State some of the common forms of "blurred vision." Why does focusing one eye on the spiritual and one eye on the material create blurred vision?

  6. What is an impossibility? Why? How many people know this is impossible?
